You Probably Won’t Make It, and EDGE
I made a new game. Well, actually I finished up an old little something I made a while back. It’s a sequel to “You Made It”, called “You Probably Won’t Make It”. I started the game as a test for creating a solid platform engine. And it’s very solid, I never got any problem.
In previous games, there was always a little something that made it only 99% perfect (though the glitches aren’t noticeable so much to the average player), but now it’s, as far as I know, 100% perfect. The engine that is, not talking about the game itself.
It’s basically a very difficult platformer, but quite addicting. It also has an interesting feature where the blood that appears when you die will always remain there, also when you restart the game later. Plus, after you die it shows the path you took, so you can follow that again but slightly adjust it to (hopefully) make the jump right.
Platforms, spikes, and double-jumping. You Probably Won’t Make It.
Oh and something else. The new EDGE features an article about web based game portals, including YoYoGames. They show 4 screenshots of 4 games all made by me…! EDGE is a very credible magazine so I’m extremely pleased. =)
“Search for the works of famed user 2Dcube, for example, and you’ll find four pages of inspired puzzle games[...]”
Do you know all of these 4?

increpare:
Well if anything seemed like an invitation to look for bugs/glitches, this is it, heh. if you’re holding right when you die, and you tap up some time during the death animation, then you no longer move right when you come back to life and have to tap right again to move.
congrats on the edge mentions
February 5, 2009, 3:17 pmAndrew:
Cool! It’s a lot more polished than its prequel. Oh, and it’s great to see GM games mentioned in magazines, congratulations.
-Andrew.
February 5, 2009, 9:28 pmNoyb:
Pretty fun. Made it to level 18. :p
I think I might have liked it better if the paths were only rewritten on more productive attempts, not just all deaths. That and it feels like the collision mask is slightly bigger than the player, especially in a few levels with narrow gaps.
Congrats on Edge!

Level 10 is too easy, its a 2 jump victory.
at level 12 I lost my guy for about 10 second, couldnt see him, then he just came back.
Couple of suggestions:
-make the line a different color than the background, its can get confusing if you’re trying to make a jump but can’t quite make out, in the heat of the moment, what’s a platform and what’s not.(this happens very rarely though)
-The game gets in these kind of situations in my case, I think because of the rapid falling and jumping, it’s also where I make most of my misjudging mistakes.
-have 2 or 3 lines, each more faded once it gets older(this could also work for the blood effects perhaps?)
or
-only keep the line that got you closest to the door
-The line would be more effective if you would know from what point of your character it is drawn. In some instances I would think to follow the exact same line as before, but then not doing so just quite.
- walking into a spike without touching the tip, but still dying is kinda silly.
It would also be really nice if you could get feedback from each player to get some statistics.
Pretty cool game in all, with the vib-ribbon aesthetics.(I made it to level 14)
February 6, 2009, 6:22 amJesse:
Level 10 is too easy, its a 2 jump victory.
>>> Er… Yeah kind of silly, I should’ve checked that.
at level 12 I lost my guy for about 10 second, couldnt see him, then he just came back.
>>> This is really weird, never had anything like this. What kind of situation was the character in?
Couple of suggestions:
-make the line a different color than the background, its can get confusing if you’re trying to make a jump but can’t quite make out, in the heat of the moment, what’s a platform and what’s not.(this happens very rarely though)
>>> As you say it happens rarely (and I personally never had a problem with it), plus it wouldn’t fit the aesthetics so much.
-The game gets in these kind of situations in my case, I think because of the rapid falling and jumping, it’s also where I make most of my misjudging mistakes.
>>> It makes it more difficult / challenging I think. I’m not saying the game is all that good though, it’s just meant to be really hard.
-have 2 or 3 lines, each more faded once it gets older(this could also work for the blood effects perhaps?)
or
-only keep the line that got you closest to the door
>>> more lines is a nice idea but a bit heavy on the engine unfortunately, plus again I don’t think it would fir the style.
Your second idea here is a good suggestion but very difficult to program.
-The line would be more effective if you would know from what point of your character it is drawn. In some instances I would think to follow the exact same line as before, but then not doing so just quite.
>>> Well it’s drawn from the center of the character. Seems clear enough for me, you should get a feel for it when playing.
- walking into a spike without touching the tip, but still dying is kinda silly.
>>> I guess the hitbox should’ve been a pixel smaller, thanks for the tip.
It would also be really nice if you could get feedback from each player to get some statistics.
>>> True.
Pretty cool game in all, with the vib-ribbon aesthetics.(I made it to level 14)
February 6, 2009, 6:29 am>>> Thanks for playing!
Kian:
Glad you’re back, it’s been a bit boring without you
February 6, 2009, 1:39 pmYou Probably Won’t Make It is fantastic, I enjoyed it a lot!
I got to level 14 before I gave up… for now. I just wish that
the most successful path would be redrawn as well as the most resent.
Jay:
Yeah, cool game but practically unbeatable.
February 7, 2009, 5:20 amMade it to level 15, and it seems like it’s impossible to hit the space between the two big spikes due to the problem Esquar already pointed out about dying from a spike without touching the tip. I suppose if you managed to hit the space, continuing from it would be impossible because of the required jump angle to get further. Waiting for an update. =)
Jesse:
Thanks for your positive comment Kian!
Jay, the trick with the level where you’re at is to land it down in a bit of a vertical line. This way you don’t slide as much after landing. The sliding is what makes you hit the spikes.
Good luck

I think it’s impossible, at least, I never made it but then again I didn’t really try so much either.
February 10, 2009, 11:44 amValarauka:
Nice game; I’m up to level 16 so far. I want to report a huge memory leak though: on my system, the game eats up a few megabytes of memoryeach time I die, I have a feeling it’s something to do with the bitmap being saved on death. On death-heavy levels (like, all of them ;p) this can balloon into several hundred megs really fast and starts making everything else page out after a while… In case you need to know, this is on WinXP Pro, 32-bit, on an Intel Core 2 Duo.
February 10, 2009, 1:05 pmPekuja:
@KaL: Are you saying you beat level 18?
February 10, 2009, 3:56 pmPekuja:
Check this out: http://pekuja.com/misc/level18-almost.png
February 10, 2009, 4:33 pmWhat that is is I jumped on the one pixel space on the edge of the middle platform with the spikes. I can almost make the jump, but I think that jump is not actually possible. If however there’s a similar one-pixel space on the right edge of the platform, the jump from there would be pretty easy. I’ve tried many times though, and I’ve never hit the right edge.
Katnip:
I’m glad I’m not the only one who insanely tried to get across using that little edge next to the spikes. As far as I can tell it’s impossible to complete since that extra space only exists on the left hand side of ledges. Though there technically is a tiny amount of space on the right hand, your characters hitbox is too big to ever land on it.
Also I’ll confirm the memory leak. While I was playing level 18 I maxed out my ram after a couple hundred deaths and the game couldn’t keep track of blood splatters anymore.
February 10, 2009, 5:56 pmdfasfasd:
There are no more levels after level 18
February 10, 2009, 9:12 pmKaL:
Nah I didn’t beat it I’d just hoped it’d be more of a difficult challenge then simply being too far to jump.
February 10, 2009, 11:43 pmJesse:
Pekuja, that’s pretty amazing.
As for the memory leak, thanks for reporting, I never considered this…
And as for level 18 itself, I was hoping the title would be kind of a hint >_<
Anyway thanks for playing!

February 11, 2009, 4:49 amBen:
That’s really a great game!
You’ve got the balance between difficulty and feasibility just right - the levels are very hard, but you still want to complete them and not give up straight away. It’s also amazing how you manage to introduce new difficulties on each level, can’t wait to get to the last ones.
I ran it from inside it’s zip and after I got to level 14 I closed it, and when I later opened again I was back in level 1
February 11, 2009, 7:40 amThis is very frustrating. Please make it more clear that you have to extract it before you play….
Jesse:
Thanks Ben!
Sorry your progress didn’t get saved. There’s a readme file (titled “You Probably Won’t Read It”;) ) that comes with the game that says you should extract. Generally it’s always a good idea to extract games since many need to save data in some way.

wow, why am i still playing this? haha.. i thought the game was really brilliant up till lvl 18. Where i stopped smiling, and just was pure frustrated..
Its clever that, up until the end levels, the biggest challenge is near the start of each level, so you dont feel too frustrated when you die, and the blood thing adds a level of “uniqueness” to everyones play.. which makes it seem like you added something even when all you did was die…
the white line could do with being changed to something which is red/black, depending what colour it covers, and it would be good if only the play that i made most progress was tracked with the line too (assuming that the line is there to help me??)
Cool game, but lvl 18 i thought was just too much to ask of the player and seemed like a massive slap in the face for everyone who got that far

@erpay I tried again after your latest post and you are telling the truth. You can get onto the 2 pixel gap to the left of the spike.
